SO WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?

Whilst Pilates is not just about the Reformer (it’s a whole exercise system including the mat and other unique equipment) The majority of the classes at the studio are taught on the reformer. The first time people see a reformer they often comment that it looks like a torture device, a stretching rack of sorts. This is understandable considering it is a sliding carriage with ropes, pulleys and straps attached all controlled by five springs of varying tensions.

Due to its recent rise in popularity many would think the reformer is a modern invention. However the reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment designed by Joseph Pilates (the creator of Pilates) and was first used in his studio environment in New York in the 1920s.

I invented all these machines… it resists your movements in just the right way so those inner muscles really have to work against it. That way you can concentrate on movement. You must always do it slowly and smoothly. Then your whole body is in it. – Joseph Pilates

The uniqueness of the machine and its spring system are what make it such an effective and enjoyable exercise method. It also means it is highly adaptive as the spring load can be adjusted depending on who is working out. From those who are returning to exercise after joint replacement to high level athletes.
During a reformer class you will work the entire body with a focus on moving your joints through their full range of movement under tension, strengthening and stabilising your trunk, improving balance and coordination.

Working in small groups of four this semi-private class environment means you get plenty of attention ensuring correct form, and appropriate modifications should you need them. It’s a friendly, supportive environment.

About Charlotte

I turned to Pilates when I was struggling with my mental health whilst working in London. I would squeeze a class into my lunch hour to give my mind time to switch off from everything else. I still vividly remember the first time I saw a reformer and thought “you want me to do what? On that?!” But I was soon hooked on how it made me feel.

Some time after moving back to the Cotswolds the opportunity came up to train as an instructor. Even though I had never considered it before it made sense to follow this path. I knew first hand how Pilates had helped me so how fulfilling would it be to help others reap the same benefits.

In 2019 I certified with STOTT Pilates as a reformer and mat instructor and have continued to teach a wide variety of people ever since. We have a lovely, friendly, supportive community of Pilates people.

I am continuously taking workshops in special populations and furthering my knowledge so that I am able to help whatever your specific needs.
In 2022 I opened my own studio on the farm I live on. It was important to me to create a tranquil safe space for people to not only feel stronger in body but in mind too. A place that is welcoming. It doesn’t matter who you are, what your goal is I am here to help.
