SO WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?
The first time people see a reformer they often comment that it looks like a torture device, a stretching rack of sorts. This is understandable considering it is a sliding carriage with ropes, pulleys and straps attached all controlled by five springs of varying tensions.
However the reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment designed by Joseph Pilates (the creator of Pilates) and was first used in a studio environment in New York in the 1920s.
The uniqueness of the machine and its spring system are what make it such an effective and enjoyable exercise method. It also means it is highly adaptive as the spring load can be adjusted depending on who is working out. From those who are returning to exercise after joint replacement to high level athletes.
During a reformer workout you will work the entire body with a focus on working your joints through their full range of movement under tension, strengthening and stabilising your trunk, improving balance and coordination.
Most people return week after week because exercises on the reformer are always varied and fun! You will also find you are unable to focus on anything other than the exercise and how your body is moving. It gives you a great mental freedom from everyday worries and stresses.
